So I spent all afternoon trying to install a new printer.  What a waste of my time!! When I downloaded the HP Smart Installer I got a message that I should pay a monthly fee for drivers. I didn't think this should be the case as I've never had to pay for new drivers before so I bypassed it but of course the printer will not install without the drivers. Tried to go back into HP Smart to get the drivers and now I can't access that page. I just get the page to link my computer to the printer and that will not work without the drivers. So annoying! What should I do annd why do I have to pay £9 plus a month on top of what I have paid for the printer to get these drivers?

Hi @Frustrating68,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re frustrated because your HP printer isn’t installing properly and you encountered a message about paying for drivers. Let’s go through a few steps to get your printer working without any extra fees.

a. Download the Free Full-Feature Drivers

HP printers do not require a paid subscription for drivers. The HP Smart monthly fee is for optional Instant Ink or cloud printing services, not for basic drivers.

Go to the official HP support site for your printer: https://support.hp.com

Enter your printer model, then select Software, Drivers and Firmware.

Download the Full Feature Software and Drivers for your operating system. This includes everything needed to print and scan.

b. Uninstall HP Smart (Optional)

If HP Smart is causing confusion or errors, uninstall it first:

Windows: Settings > Apps > HP Smart > Uninstall

Mac: Applications > HP Smart > Move to Trash

Restart your computer before reinstalling drivers.

c. Install Drivers Manually

Run the downloaded Full Feature Installer and follow the on-screen prompts.

Connect the printer via USB first (recommended) to complete driver setup.

After successful installation, you can configure Wi-Fi if needed.

d. Avoid Subscription Messages

During installation or in HP Smart, you may be prompted to enroll in HP Instant Ink. This is optional.

Simply decline the subscription; it’s not required for printing or scanning.

e. Verify Printer Installation

After installation, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers (Windows) or System Preferences > Printers & Scanners (Mac).

Make sure your printer shows as Ready and you can print a test page.

I hope this helps.
