My friend gave me their old printer. I set it up just fine, but when I try to subscribe to HP Instant Ink, it shows this Error Code: UA_400_EB000U0422 with a message saying "Unable to register the printer to your account. This printer is associated with another account. You can use this printer and the HP app to print, scan, copy, and more, but you will not have access to cloud features like Print Anywhere..." I'm not sure how to remove the previous account.

Hi @danaids

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation so clearly. I understand how frustrating it must feel to have everything set up and working, only to be blocked from using Instant Ink and cloud features due to a lingering account association.

You’ve already done a great job getting the printer up and running—let’s now focus on clearing that error and restoring full access.

Here are the steps to remove the previous account association and register the printer to your own HP account:

Factory reset the printer again

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • If the menu is locked or inaccessible, power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on and try again.
  • This clears stored credentials and resets the printer’s cloud registration.

Remove the printer from the previous HP account

  • Ask your friend to log in to their HP account at HP App Web Portal
  • Once signed in, go to “My Printers” and remove the printer from their account.
  • This step is essential to release the printer from its previous cloud registration.

Re-add the printer to your HP account

  • Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  • Sign in with your own HP account.
  • Add the printer by selecting “Set up a new printer” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once added, go to Instant Ink and try subscribing again.

Check for firmware updates

  • In the HP App, select your printer and go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.
  • Install any available updates to ensure the printer is ready for cloud features.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi and enable Web Services

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Settings and confirm connection to your local Wi-Fi.
  • Then go to Setup > Web Services Setup > Enable Web Services.
  • This activates cloud features like Print Anywhere and Instant Ink eligibility.

For reference, here’s the official support page that explains this error and how to resolve it:
HP Printer Setup – 'We're sorry, something went wrong' error

Once the printer is removed from the previous account and reset, you should be able to register it under your own account and enjoy full access to Instant Ink and cloud features.

I figured out the solution with no help from HP employees. I tried calling and other support options, but they kept trying to sell me a new computer or charge $20 for “support.”

If you’re having this same issue because you have a secondhand printer, listen up. This only applies if your printer had a previous owner.

You must already have the printer set up in the HP app. Scroll down to Printer Settings, select View All, then Advanced Settings. Click OK, or if it mentions a private connection, continue to the website.

Once on the website, go to Settings, scroll down to Restore Defaults, and select it. You’ll need the PIN, which should be located on the back of the printer next to the serial number. Select Start Secure Erase.

After the printer resets, turn it back on. Remove the device from the HP app, then reinstall the app and reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi. Once this process is complete, you should be able to purchase HP Instant Ink.

Goodluck and God speed.
