if you disconnect the printer and opt out of free ink during set up, how will HP printer firmware be updated if it's not connected to the Internet? I read many comments saying that if you do not use their instant ink or they are cartridges that they can break your computer. Why not updating the firmware to the point that the printer becomes useless?

Hi @MisMelis
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
If you disconnect your HP printer from the Internet and opt out of the Instant Ink program, firmware updates can still be applied manually.
Here’s how it works:
Updating Firmware Without Internet
- Download Firmware to a Computer:
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model. Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support
- Download the latest firmware update to your computer.
- Transfer Firmware via USB:
- Use a USB flash drive to transfer the firmware update to your printer.
- Follow the instructions provided by HP to install the update.
Impact of Instant Ink on Printer Functionality
- HP Instant Ink is an optional subscription service that automatically delivers ink cartridges based on your usage. If you opt out, you can still use regular cartridges purchased from retailers.
- Instant Ink cartridges are designed specifically for the subscription service. If you cancel the subscription, these cartridges will stop working, but replacing them with standard cartridges will restore normal functionality.
Concerns About Firmware Updates
- Firmware updates are essential for improving printer performance, fixing bugs, and ensuring compatibility with new cartridges. However, some users have expressed concerns that updates might limit the use of third-party cartridges.
- To avoid potential issues, you can choose to delay or skip firmware updates, but this may leave your printer vulnerable to security risks or performance issues.
