I cannot clear this warning nor print. I have followed all online prompts to no avail. My HP Instant Ink account is up to date. I've turned the printer off and on. Turned my router off and on. Not sure what to do next. Thanks!

Hi @Clueless791,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating this is. You’ve done everything right, your Instant Ink account is active, and yet the printer stubbornly shows “Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink.” It feels like being locked out of your own printer, and that’s not okay.
Let’s fix this together.

Why This Happens

This error usually occurs when:

  • The printer lost its connection to HP’s Instant Ink servers.
  • The printer is not properly linked to your HP account after a network or firmware change.
  • The cartridge is locked to Instant Ink, and the printer cannot verify enrollment.

Recommended Steps

Step 1: Confirm Enrollment

Step 2: Check Internet & HP Account Sync

  • Ensure the printer is connected to Wi-Fi with internet access.
  • On the printer screen, go to Settings > Network > Wireless Status and confirm the connection.

Step 3: Restart Printer & Router

  • Power off the printer and router for 60 seconds.
  • Power them back on and wait until both are fully online.

Step 4: Sign Out & Back In on HP Smart

  • Open the HP App (or HP Smart).
  • Sign out of your HP account.
  • Sign back in and re-add the printer.

Step 5: Update Firmware

  • On the printer: Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
  • Or use HP’s firmware update tool:
    👉 Official HP® Support

Step 6: Force Enrollment Sync

  • On the printer, go to Settings > HP Account > Sync (if available).
  • If not, remove the printer from HP Smart and re-add it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
