OfficeJet 3830
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have an HP OfficeJet 3830.   It was working fine until started getting Cartridge not compatible message.  I removed/reinserted cartridge, cycle power on printer with no improvement.  I purchased a new cartridge which solved the problem for awhile, then started getting the same error with the new cartridge.  Sometimes I get "cartridge must be used in the printer where initially used" error.  I've tried the solutions indicated here and none of them have worked.  I'm convinced the problem is with the printer.

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are getting a cartridge issue, follow these steps to fix the issue.

Clean the ink cartridge and carriage electrical contacts

  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  2. Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message from the carriage.

    • Carriages with cartridge latches: Open the latch, and then pull the cartridge up and out of the slot.

    • Carriages without cartridge latches: Gently press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull it out of the slot.

  3. Holding the cartridge by the sides, remove any protective tape that still might be on the contacts.

    CAUTION:

Do not touch the ink nozzles or the copper-colored electrical strip. Touching or trying to remove these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  4. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.

  6. Wait 10 minutes for the contacts to dry, and then reinsert the cartridge into its color-coded slot.

  7. Repeat these steps for the other cartridge if it was indicated in the error message.

This did not help.  It's now giving a different error, which it has given before, also: "The indicated cartridge can only be used in the printer that initially used and must be replaced."  This is the only printer this cartridge has been used in.  I've tried the "resetting the printer" - removing cartridge, turning off power, unplugging, waiting awhile, plugging back in turning on power, inserting cartridge.  Nothing seems to help.  Before this started, the printer was working fine with this cartridge.  I printed a document and it worked fine.  I sent another document to the printer and got the error.
