After the Instant Ink subscription is terminated by you or by HP,. Instant Ink Cartridges lock and cannot be used in any printer.
This is normal - ink is provided for use with a paid subscription.
The return of the Instant Ink cartridges to HP is a free service.

You can certainly decide to resubscribe, though doing so for ink cartridges you have now is perhaps not a reason to do so.
What?
Ink is included in an active subscription at no extra charge to the monthly subscription.
Instant Ink is a Print-by-Page subscription model -- you are paying for a block of pages.
