I received an email from Instantink.com telling me I now have a coupon from NEFT.com worth $30. Is it a scam?

Nift is a gift card company. Not a single review on Better Business Bureau is positive; everybody calls it a "trick" to get your information and offer you no value. It also hints that the giving company (in this case, IntantInk) sold your information to Nift so they can advertise to you. After reading comments on BBB.org, I am marking my email invitation from InstantInk to "enjoy a gift from HP" by accepting $30 Nift gift as Junk mail.

Welcome to the HP English Community --
I am not aware that anyone besides HP can issue discounts on HP Services.
Would HP send such an email?
No idea -- I don't have Instant Ink
and
I do not expect free gifts from HP or anyone else.
Update / Edit
I cannot verify that HP would send out such an email.
I've bumped my request to the Moderators for information.
Original Message - Shortened
Were it mine to do, I would contact Instant Ink Support (at HP)
Ask if they know whether HP would send you this type of advertising email.
No answer?
Treat the email as suspect -
Decide for yourself whether you need free stuff badly enough to trust what you see.

Good choice.
That was my initial assessment - Beware of unsolicited mail
==== Dragon Opinion =======
To those reading
I distrust "free" -- there is always a catch -- Giving out your information to another group of people you do not know is risky.
Companies sell and share people's information all the time. Data is money.
Unless the email states in writing that your private information will not be shared outside of HP, then it is very likely that whatever you do / say / click will be shared with anyone.
Once you leave a protected source, account, website - everything you give away is "out there".
Even if the Nift people are not rats, if not prevented from doing so, they might sell or share your information to other parties.
Don't care?
Desperately Want or Need free stuff?
You are half-way to doing what you want.
==========================================
I have never received this particular advertisement --
Good filters and a strong anti-spam-sense prevents most unsolicited mail from infiltrating.
Instant Ink Support could not / would not say anything positive about the solicitation.
OK -- Perhaps Marketing does not always check with Support. It would not be the first time one department did not talk to another department. ??
That said, HP and other legitimate companies are not the Internet Police --
There are no Internet Police, in fact.
Thanks for the followup.

But the email address is
donotreply@instant.hpsmart.com
So, it looks very legit.
Hence many are asking and wondering besides myself.
Since, it's the same email address we receive ink shipment notifications from.

"Yeah, but"
You must do as you wish.
Email addresses can be spoofed.
OR
The mail might be legitimate.
If you cannot get confirmation from Instant Ink Support that HP sent the mail, then perhaps be very careful of handing out your information in an email just for the promise of "free stuff".
Click and take your changes --
OR
Contact Instant Ink Support
OR
Wait to see if an HP agent responds here to comment further on the question
Free is only free if you don't hand out your personal information to those who turn out to be rats and thieves.
Good Luck.
