My Instant Ink sub has expired. Great, so I installed a standard HP black cartridge. Printer will not work. Give me a message that my cartridge is incompatible (in current configuration). So how do I go back to just having a normal printer, and print when I want with a standard cartridge? How do I alter my current configuration to do this?

Hi @Kiarian,
Thank you for your response. For the HP DeskJet 2700e series printer, you should use the HP 305 ink cartridges. The HP 301, 302, 304, and 305 cartridges are different series designed for various models, and it's important to use the correct cartridge type for optimal performance.
Here’s a quick guide to help you:
- HP 305 Cartridges: These are the correct cartridges for the HP DeskJet 2700e series. They come in black (305 Black) and color (305 Tri-color) options.
- HP 301, 302, 304: These cartridges are designed for other HP printer models and are not compatible with the DeskJet 2700e series.
Using the correct cartridges ensures that you get the best print quality and avoid any potential issues with your printer. If you’re buying new cartridges, make sure they are specifically listed as compatible with the HP DeskJet 2700e series.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Kiarian,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your HP Instant Ink subscription expires and you switch to a standard cartridge, you might encounter issues because your printer was initially configured to work with Instant Ink cartridges. Here’s how you can resolve the "incompatible cartridge" issue and revert to using standard cartridges:
Steps to Reconfigure Your Printer for Standard Cartridges
Remove the Instant Ink Cartridge:
- Turn on your printer and open the cartridge access door.
- Carefully remove the Instant Ink cartridge(s) from the printer.
Install the Standard Cartridge:
- Install the standard black cartridge (and color cartridge if needed) into the printer. Ensure you’re using the correct cartridge for your specific printer model.
Reset the Printer:
- With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet. Wait about 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet, then into the printer, and turn it on.
- This reset can help clear any residual settings related to Instant Ink.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Sometimes, a firmware update can resolve compatibility issues. Check your printer’s manual or HP’s website for instructions on how to update your printer’s firmware.
Check Printer Settings:
- Access the printer’s settings menu via the control panel on the printer or through the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
- Look for settings related to cartridges or ink management and ensure they are set to use standard cartridges.
Perform a Printer Alignment and Test Print:
- After installing the standard cartridges, perform a printer alignment and test print. This can usually be done from the printer’s settings menu.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel, thanks for the reply. Can I just confirm what is the standard printer cartridge I should be using for my HP Deskjet 2700e Series printer? I'm using a HP 301 black cartridge. Do I need a 302, 304 or 305 cartridge for my printer? I never knew there were so many different options. It's a bit silly to be honest.
