I am trying to set-up a new HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e. I loaded my ink cartridges and the yellow ink cartridge is not communicating correctly with the printer. I have tried removing the cartridge and reinstalling. I have cycled the machine off, and I continue to get the same message.

Hi @89445,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue with the yellow ink cartridge not communicating on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e could be due to a variety of reasons. Here's a troubleshooting guide to help resolve this problem:

Steps to Resolve Ink Cartridge Communication Issues

1. Inspect the Ink Cartridge

  • Genuine HP Cartridge: Ensure you are using a genuine HP cartridge compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e.
  • Cartridge Contacts: Check the copper-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the cartridge for physical damage, leaks, or residue.

2. Inspect the Printer

  • Check the Cartridge Slot: Look inside the printer where the cartridge is installed. Use a flashlight if necessary to check for any debris or ink residue.
  • Clean Printer Contacts: Gently clean the electrical contacts inside the printer that connect with the cartridge using the same method as above.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.
  • Reinstall the yellow cartridge.

4. Perform a Printer Reset

  • Go to the printer’s settings menu.
  • Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Reset Printer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Update Firmware  Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure the printer firmware is up-to-date.
  • Use the HP Smart app or download the latest firmware from the HP Support website.

6. Try a Different Cartridge

  • If possible, try installing a different yellow cartridge to determine if the issue lies with the cartridge or the printer.

7. Check for Factory Seals

  • Verify that all protective tape or seals on the cartridge were removed before installation.

8. Run a Diagnostic

  • From the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Reports > Diagnostics Report. Check for any errors related to the ink system.

9.    Handle cartridges carefully to avoid touching the copper-colored contacts.

  • Store replacement cartridges in a cool, dry place to prevent damage.

This is a brand new printer that I am attempting to set-up. The ink is correct and is what was sent with the machine. I can't get past the ink cartridge issue to attempt to get into the menu settings. I can't connect the machine to my wi-fi to run any type of diagnostic or do a firmware update. I just have a yellow "cartridge problem." I have tried steps 1 through 3 several times with no luck.
