Hi @Joe1999,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the HP Envy 5640 printer might not be recognizing the cartridge properly. Here are some steps to try.

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Double-check that the cartridge is the correct model for the HP Envy 5640. Compatible cartridges for this model are HP 62 or HP 62XL.

Inspect Cartridge Contacts: Remove the cartridge and check for any protective tape on the cartridge’s contacts (copper-colored area). Make sure it’s fully removed, as even a tiny bit left behind can cause connection issues. Also, ensure the contacts on the printer where the cartridge touches are clean.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power source.
  • Wait 1-2 minutes before reconnecting and powering it on again.
  • Reinstall the cartridge and check if it’s recognized.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off and unplug the printer.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of distilled water or rubbing alcohol. Allow it to dry fully.
  • Clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer carefully.
  • Reinstall the cartridge.

Update Printer Firmware: If the firmware is out of date, it might cause cartridge recognition issues. You can update the firmware using the HP Smart app or from the printer’s settings if it’s connected to Wi-Fi.

Try Another Cartridge: Although you've already tried a new cartridge, if possible, try testing with another one, especially an original HP cartridge, as remanufactured ones sometimes cause compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
