Ink cartridge problem

Hardly used printer over lockdown and now it's throwing a cartridge error with the black - 'remove and install....', tried reinstalling, cleaning contact with lint free cloth, disconnecting power whilst it's on for 60 seconds, still not working.  I've been paying in for the 'instant ink' subscription every month, the printer is out of warranty as of Nov 19 and really not had much use.  Now being prompted to pay for support - is this some kind of con - an 'engineered' problem?  Not happy and will be cancelling the subscription unless I can at least get sent a black cartridge to try (only had one in the last 18 months!)..
