This is a repost

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 that was left behind by a former colleague. I did a factory reset on the settings but every time I try to print something, I get an "Need to enroll in HP Instant Ink to print". I don't want to enroll in Instant Ink, how do I bypass or delete this from the printer?

If I cannot bypass or delete, I will just junk the printer. No company should force you to use their products ever.

The reply I got was this feature cannot be bypassed or deleted, so my followup question is I have OEM HP  ink cartridges for this printer but when I install them, I get the same error message. How am I suppose to use this printer if the only way to get ink is through the subscription process?

Hello Pmusni,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Bypassing HP Instant Ink Enrollment on HP OfficeJet Pro 6978

The HP Instant Ink service is optional, and users should be able to print without enrollment. If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is prompting you to enroll in HP Instant Ink to print, it might be due to certain settings or configurations. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

  1. Check for HP Instant Ink Locked Cartridges:

    • If your printer came with HP Instant Ink cartridges, they might be locked to the printer through the service.
    • Try replacing the cartridges with standard (non-Instant Ink) HP cartridges.
  2. Disable Web Services:

    • On the printer control panel, navigate to the Web Services settings.
    • Disable Web Services by following the on-screen prompts. This action can sometimes remove Instant Ink dependencies.
  3. Cancel Instant Ink Subscription (If Applicable):

    • If a previous user enrolled the printer in the Instant Ink program, ensure the subscription has been canceled through the HP Instant Ink account dashboard.
  4. Update Printer Firmware:

    • Check for any available firmware updates for your printer via the HP support website. In some cases, updates may address printing issues related to Instant Ink.
  5. Factory Reset Again:

    • Perform a factory reset to restore all printer settings to default if initial setup issues persist.
    • Ensure that during setup, you select the option to use non-Instant Ink or standard cartridges if prompted.
  6. Reinstall Printer Software:

    • Uninstall the current printer drivers from your computer.
    • Download and install the latest drivers and software for your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 from the HP Support website.
  7. Print Test Page:

    • Print a test page from the printer menu to see if the issue persists without using a computer.

If none of these steps work, and the printer still enforces HP Instant Ink usage, consider reaching out to HP Support for further assistance, as they might offer specific guidance for bypassing service requirements.
