HP LaserJet M209dwe Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I've had my black and white HP printer for a few years and it works great. But I haven't used it enough to justify the cost of Instant Ink. So after the first cartridge was sent, I cancelled the subscription service. So fast forward to now, after a couple of years, and I finally needed to replace the ink in the printer today. I installed the cartridge I've had in reserve for over a year since I first got the printer. Now as I understand it, the "Instant Ink" cartridge is deprogrammed if I un-enrolled in Instant Ink program. So I re-enrolled in the program. Yet my printer still won't work with that cartridge. I have synced the printer, and as far as I can see on the HP website, I am re-enrolled and everything should work. My question is this: the ink I had in reserve is brand new...I just took it out of the box today...It is a perfectly good ink cartridge. Will the printer ever recognize it as usable?  Must I wait for HP to send me a new Instant Ink cartridge? Thanks for the help!

@ASRaff, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Instant Ink Cartridge Issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Instant Ink cartridges provided through HP's subscription service are unique in that they are monitored and managed by the subscription, including activation and deactivation based on your subscription status.

Since you've cancelled the Instant Ink subscription, the cartridges provided by the service and any reserves you had from the subscription can no longer be used. These cartridges are tied to the subscription service and will only function if the subscription is active.

Steps to Resolve:

Purchase Regular HP Cartridges: You will need to purchase new HP standard cartridges that are not associated with Instant Ink. These cartridges should be available directly through HP or other authorized retailers.

Install New Cartridges: Install the newly purchased standard HP cartridges in your printer. Follow the installation steps provided either on the cartridge packaging or the printer manual to ensure proper setup.

Perform a Printer Reset: If the printer continues not to recognize the new standard cartridges, try performing a reset on your HP printer. This often resolves recognition issues.

Update Printer Firmware: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates on the HP support website. Sometimes, firmware updates can solve recognition problems with new cartridges.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
