Mine is more of a complaint than a question and I don't know where else to go.

I canceled my Instant Ink subscription recently because I'm not using the service enough to make it cost effective.

I was told that eventually the Instant Ink cartridges will stop working. That angers me very much.

While using Instant Ink, I paid for those cartridges so they should be available until they physically run out of ink.

That needs to be changed.

Hi @Jeff17866

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are unable to use instant ink cartridges after canceling the program. I'd like to help!

When did you place a request to cancel the Instant ink service? Did you get any email confirmation?

Have you tried to log in to the Instant ink account page and check if the account is still active/suspended/canceled?

You can’t use HP Instant Ink cartridges after you cancel your service. Why? Because Instant Ink is an alternate way to print, where you pay for the pages you print, not for ink cartridges. Just as with a cell phone plan you can only make calls as long as you are enrolled with your cell provider, and you can only print with Instant Ink cartridges while you are enrolled in an Instant Ink plan. If you cancel, you must buy regular ink cartridges to resume printing.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you remove the ink cartridges from the printer and then perform a hard reset.

  • Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove the USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, and press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
  • Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Let me know how it goes for further assistance!

The above is one of the biggest misconceptions regarding the Instant Ink program.  When you sign up for the Instant Ink program you are NOT purchasing ink, you are purchasing a subscription to a set number of pages per month.  The ink is supplied, but remains the property of HP and must be returned if you cancel the program in accordance with the terms of service.  See sections 5.d and 9.c of the terms of service here.

It still prints but my issue is the fact that I won't be able to finish using the ink I paid for.

Ok. I read those sections and am sorry I even joined this program.

I am sorry the plan did not meet your needs or expectations.   From the HP point of view, it would not be reasonable to have the cartridges continue to print after the subscription ends.  If the cartridges would continue to work I could sign up for Instant Ink for my Officet Pro 8610, keep the program for a few months at a total cost of $15 or so, and then print for perhaps the next two years with the huge cartridges supplied by the Instant Ink program.

By the way, you will likely receive a final bill at some point in the future.  The Instant Ink program bills in arrears, you will receive the final bill after your subscription ends.

I do not plan to respond further in this thread.

Make sure you replace all the ink cartridges on the printer to regular ink cartridges. Even if a single instant ink cartridge is installed on the printer your printer might not work. Replace low, empty or faulty ink cartridges on your printer. Clean the cartridge contacts and check if it helps.
