Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER

When my Instant Ink cartridges get low, the black ink begins to show blotches on printed materials. The problem recurs even after I select "Clean Print Heads". Is this a problem with the product? If so, how can I correct it? I can't seem to get any help from HP Support.

I got the following by asking HP's SupportGPT AI bot

Fixing Blotchy Black Print with HP Instant Ink Cartridges

Blotches or poor black print quality when your Instant Ink cartridges get low are usually caused by clogged nozzles, dried ink, or a printhead alignment issue rather than the subscription itself. HP recommends using the built‑in cleaning and alignment tools before replacing the cartridge.

1. Run the printhead / cartridge cleaning tool

Use the printer’s maintenance tools to clear clogged nozzles:

  • Printers with a touchscreen or menus:

    • On the printer, open Settings or Setup
    • Tap Tools or Printer Maintenance
    • Select Clean Printhead or Clean Cartridges
  • Printers without a touchscreen:

    • Open the HP app on your computer or mobile device
    • Select your printer
    • Go to Print Quality Tools under Diagnostics or Tools
    • Run the cleaning tool

After cleaning, a print quality page prints. If blotches are still visible, run up to two more cleaning cycles. If lines are misaligned or edges look fuzzy, also run a printhead alignment from the same maintenance menu.

2. Check the cartridge and installation

If cleaning doesn’t resolve the blotches:

  1. Remove the black Instant Ink cartridge.
  2. Confirm the cartridge number is compatible with your printer (compare to the previous cartridge or check the supported list online).
  3. Inspect the cartridge for visible damage or leaks.
  4. Turn the printer off, unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug directly into a wall outlet.
  5. Reinstall the cartridge firmly in the correct slot and power the printer back on.

If the cartridge looks damaged or still causes poor print quality, contact HP Instant Ink support for a replacement.

3. When to replace the cartridge

If, after cleaning and alignment, black text continues to show blotches or streaking, the cartridge may be at the end of its usable life even if it’s not yet fully reported as empty. In that case:

4. Keep your printer connected

Maintaining an active internet connection lets HP Instant Ink monitor ink levels and ship replacement cartridges before quality degrades or printing stops, helping avoid issues when cartridges get very low.

If these steps don’t resolve the blotching, contact HP Instant Ink support through your account page for further troubleshooting and possible cartridge replacement.
