HP OfficeJet 8015e All-in-One Printer

Hi, all. I am planning to end the  Instant Ink plan after the "free" trial, but I was told as soon as I cancel, the ink cartridges in the printer will no longer be usable. What a waste! What am I supposed to do with them? Throw in the landfill? Take to my local ink recycler? Send back to HP for them to throw out? It seems ridiculously wasteful. I feel like I'm being punished for not just printing hundreds of color images before the final date, even if I have no need of them now.
