Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP laptop is connected via WIFI to my Brother MFC-J1012DW printer. I can print documents but it will not scan back to the laptop. When I try to open the iPrint&Scan app to check the settings it will not open.

Hi @CBezan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your Brother MFC‑J1012DW is connected properly for printing, but the scanning side isn’t working because the Brother iPrint&Scan app isn’t launching. That usually points to a software or driver issue rather than a problem with the printer itself.

We request that you please follow the steps below to resolve this issue:

Update/Reinstall Brother iPrint&Scan

Uninstall the current Brother iPrint&Scan app.

Download the latest version directly from Brother’s support site for the MFC‑J1012DW.

Reinstall and restart your laptop.

Install Full Driver & Software Package

Brother provides a “Full Driver & Software Package” (not just the basic print driver).

This includes TWAIN/WIA scan drivers and the ControlCenter software needed for scanning.

Check Windows Services

Ensure the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is running.

Press Win + R, type services.msc, find “Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)” and set it to Automatic.

Test Scanning Without iPrint&Scan

Try scanning from Windows Fax and Scan or the Windows Scan app (from Microsoft Store).

If these work, the issue is isolated to the Brother app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
