Hi @0105,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

If your HP Pavilion laptop with the Ryzen 5 4000 series processor is not allowing you to access security policies or disable real-time protection, the issue is likely related to administrative restrictions or conflicts with the Windows Security settings. Here's how to troubleshoot and resolve it:

1. Verify Administrator Access

  • Ensure you are logged in with an administrator account. If you're using a standard account, you may not have permission to modify security settings.

2. Check Group Policy Restrictions (Windows Pro and Enterprise)

If your system has Group Policy, follow these steps:

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
  3. Navigate to:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus > Real-time Protection.
  4. Look for any policies like "Turn off real-time protection" and ensure they are not configured to prevent changes.
  5. Set any conflicting policies to "Not Configured."

3. Temporarily Disable Real-time Protection via Settings

  1. Open Windows Security:
    • Press Win + I to open Settings.
    • Go to Privacy & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
  2. Click on Manage settings under "Virus & threat protection settings."
  3. Toggle Real-time protection to Off.
    (You might need administrator permission.)

4. Address Third-party Security Software Conflicts

If you have third-party antivirus software installed:

  • Open the antivirus application and disable or uninstall it temporarily to check if it resolves the issue.
  • Some antivirus tools enforce their own policies that restrict Windows Defender.

5. Use Registry Editor

If access is blocked via standard settings:

  1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
  3. Check for the key DisableRealtimeMonitoring. If it exists:
    • Double-click it and set the value to 0.
  4. Restart your computer.

6. Run Windows Security Troubleshooter

  1. Press Win + R, type ms-settings:troubleshoot, and press Enter.
  2. Select Other troubleshooters.
  3. Run the Windows Security Troubleshooter to identify and fix issues.

7. Reset Windows Security

If none of the above works:

  1. Open PowerShell as Administrator (Win + X > PowerShell (Admin)).
  2. Enter the following command to reset Windows Security:

8. Check for Malware

Malware can interfere with security policies. Run a full scan:

  • Boot into Safe Mode:
    1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    2. Go to the Boot tab and select Safe boot > Minimal.
    3. Restart your PC.
  • In Safe Mode, run a full scan using Windows Defender or a trusted third-party tool like Malwarebytes.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
