Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Instant Ink. Check out this link: HP INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER. .

I was just printing and after my last print job the printer made some unusual noise (like moving the paper back and forth multiple times) stopped with the message:

The print head appears to be missing, is not recognized, or is installed incorrectly. 0xc19a0023

The print head is in its place and moves smoothly in position when opening the cover, ink cartridges are not empty at all (HP Instant Ink) and in its place - what is the problem? And how can I solve it?

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 showing a printhead error (0xc19a0023) after abnormal carriage noise, even though the printhead and cartridges appear correctly installed. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Perform a full power reset
With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds, reconnect the power directly to the wall, and turn the printer back on.

Reseat the printhead
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
Remove all ink cartridges, lift the printhead latch, remove the printhead, then reinstall it firmly and close the latch.

Check and clean printhead contacts
Inspect the gold-colored contacts on the printhead and inside the carriage.
If ink residue is present, gently clean with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water and allow it to dry.

Reinstall ink cartridges carefully
Insert each cartridge into the correct color slot until it clicks into place.
Ensure none of the cartridges are partially seated, as this can trigger printhead recognition errors.

Update printer firmware
Restart the printer and ensure it is connected to the network.
Firmware updates can resolve printhead communication and watchdog errors triggered after a stall or noise event.

Run printer self-diagnostics
From the printer control panel, navigate to Tools or Printer Maintenance and run available diagnostics.
This helps confirm whether the printer can electronically detect the printhead.

Check for carriage obstruction
With the printer powered off, gently slide the carriage left and right to confirm smooth movement.
The unusual paper movement noise you described often indicates a temporary carriage or sensor stall.

I hope this helps.
