Has anyone else had one of these mysteriously appear on their printer recently?

It's a complete mystery to us where it has come from as it is many months (at least) since either of us visited the government web-site and a few days since we printed anything off, let alone an email or attachment, neither of us was present when it was printed. In any case, neither of us would have a need to be checking our immigration status. So we are left to conclude that it is some sort of a scam.

The printer is registered with an HP InstantInk subscription and HP Smart, so HP has some degree of access to the printer (for the purpose of checking ink levels and usage for billing) and I wonder whether they have been hacked in some way.

The share code is nine alpha-numeric characters broken into 3 groups of 3.Scan.jpg

Welcome to the HP Community --

Dragon Opinion  >> I don't think it matters whether anyone else has seen or received this on their printer.

The point of contact is likely your printer security -- or worse, perhaps your home network.

Dragon Opinion  >>  Certainly you should not answer a blind summons for such personal information.  Were it mine to do, I would consider the request hostile and suspect.

IF your printer has its own email address for receiving jobs directly to the printer, then you should -- at the least --

  • Check the "allowed senders list" (if using the old ePrint technology) and change your printer's email address.

OR

  • If your printer supports Print Anywhere, check / edit your "invited senders" address list and remove any suspect addresses.

What else?

Consider the source -- If someone is printing to YOUR printer, they might know your network wireless password.  This is not trivial as it means that those who can get into your network can also cause mischief.

I realize that changing your network password can be a "big deal" --

Read about the process, decide whether the change is necessary, read your printer's user manual for important How-to information to set the printer back to Network Defaults so you can enter any new (updated) network address or other information.
