What happens if I don’t want to enroll in the ink program

Hi @Mslady5050,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 printer fully supports HP 910XL black ink cartridges. You do not need to enroll in HP Instant Ink to use XL cartridges. However, there are a few important points to ensure smooth operation:

Steps to Ensure Cartridge Recognition

  1. Use Genuine HP 910XL Cartridges
Non-HP or refilled cartridges may not be recognized and can trigger errors. HP recommends using original cartridges to ensure compatibility and print quality.

  2. Avoid Using Instant Ink Cartridges After Cancellation
If your printer was previously enrolled in Instant Ink, those cartridges are locked to the subscription. Once cancelled, they will no longer work even if they’re full.
You’ll need to replace them with standard HP 910 or 910XL cartridges.

  3. Check for Cartridge Vent Blockage
If the XL cartridge isn’t recognized, inspect the vent on top of the cartridge. Use a pin or paper clip to gently clear any adhesive or debris.

  4. Update Printer Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause recognition issues. Use the HP Smart app or visit the printer’s EWS (Embedded Web Server) to check for updates.

  5. Power Cycle the Printer
    • Remove the cartridge.
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
    • Plug it back in, turn it on, and reinsert the cartridge.

Not Interested in Instant Ink? That’s Okay!

You can continue using standard or XL cartridges without enrolling in Instant Ink. Just make sure:

  • You’re not using Instant Ink-branded cartridges.
  • You’ve fully cancelled any active Instant Ink subscription.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
