My printer was working one day and the next it won’t. I can’t connect any of my devices to it. I go to my HP instant ink app and it is telling me to buy a new printer for only $8.99/ mo. Did my printer get shut down because they want me to buy a new printer?

Hi @Alliecann,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel how upsetting this situation is. One day your printer works… the next day everything refuses to connect, and then your HP Instant Ink app suggests buying a new printer for $8.99/month. It’s natural to think.

No, HP does NOT shut down your printer to force you to buy a new one.
Your printer still belongs to you, and Instant Ink cannot disable your printer’s ability to print normally. Even if your subscription ends, the printer itself remains fully functional with regular cartridges.

Let’s walk through what actually happens, and what you can do right now to get your printer back.

Let’s try these important first steps

Please try these in order (they often resolve this exact situation):

  1. Power reset
    • Turn the printer ON
    • Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer
    • Unplug it from the wall
    • Wait 60 seconds
    • Plug it back directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip)
    • Turn it back on

  2. Restart your router
    • Power it off for 30–60 seconds
    • Turn it back on and wait until Wi-Fi is fully stable

  3. Check the printer display
    • Does it show a blue Wi-Fi light blinking, solid blue, or no light at all?
    • Does it show any error message or code?

  4. Try reconnecting the printer to Wi-Fi
    • Open the HP Smart app
    • If it says the printer is offline or missing, choose Add / Set up a new printer
    • Follow the steps to reconnect it to your Wi-Fi

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
