Hi @Suevande,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry you’re facing this frustrating experience, with the printer unable to recognize your Instant Ink cartridges and sending you to call HP. Let’s walk through some clear, step-by-step troubleshooting to get your printer back to printing smoothly.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Confirm Active Enrollment & Cartridge Match

  • Instant Ink cartridges only work in printers actively enrolled in the Instant Ink plan.
  • Make sure your current printer is enrolled in your HP Instant Ink account.
  • Verify the cartridge part numbers match the ones listed for your enrolled printer. Reference: [HP’s cartridge compatibility page].

2. Power Cycle Your Printer

  1. Turn the printer off and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and power it on.
This simple reset often clears minor glitches.

3. Reseat & Clean Cartridges

  1. Open the carriage door and remove both Instant Ink cartridges.
  2. Gently clean the copper/gold contacts on each cartridge and inside the carriage using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  3. Let contacts dry 5–10 minutes.
  4. Reinsert cartridges firmly until they click into place.

4. Update Firmware

  • Outdated firmware can trigger compatibility errors.
  • If your printer has a touchscreen, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Update.
  • Otherwise, use the HP Smart app or visit: [HP Support → Firmware Updates].

5. Printer Alignment & Printhead Cleaning

  • Navigate to Settings → Printer Maintenance (or use the HP Smart app).
  • Run:
    • Clean Printheads
    • Align Printer
This ensures that cartridges communicate correctly and print quality is optimal.

6. Rejoin Instant Ink & Replace Cartridge

  • If you see a message like “Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled”:
    1. Log in to your Instant Ink account at: HP Instant Ink – Ink Monthly Subscription | HP Official Site
    2. Verify your printer is displayed as active & linked.
    3. If not, re-enroll the printer or remove it and add it again.
    4. If a specific cartridge shows errors, remove it and install a fresh replacement (HP will send one if under plan).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
