Hi everyone,

I’m having a strange issue with my HP printer and the Instant Ink service.

For years, everything worked fine without any problems. But now, all of a sudden, my printer won’t connect to Instant Ink anymore.

When I try to connect, I get a message saying the printer is being updated and it may take a few minutes. However, nothing actually happens, and the connection to Instant Ink never works.

Because of this, the printer keeps telling me to connect to Instant Ink, and I’m unable to print.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Resetting the printer to factory settings

  • Reconnecting it to Wi-Fi (connection is stable and working)

Despite this, I still can’t connect to Instant Ink, and the issue appeared out of nowhere after working fine for years.

Has anyone experienced something similar or knows how to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @bromoko,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

It sounds like your printer is stuck in a communication loop where it attempts to update its security certificates but cannot reach the HP servers, which prevents it from validating your Instant Ink subscription.

Update DNS Settings to Bypass Network Blocks

  • Find your printer’s IP address on the network settings menu or by printing a Network Configuration page.
  • Type that IP address into a web browser on your computer or phone to open the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Go to the Network tab, select IPv4 Configuration, change DNS to Manual, and enter 8.8.8.8 for Primary and 8.8.4.4 for Secondary.

Refresh the Web Services Connection

  • While still in the EWS, click on the Web Services tab.
  • Select the option to Remove Web Services and confirm the action to clear the stuck "updating" status.
  • Click Setup or Enable to restart Web Services; this will generate a new Claim Code and force a fresh connection to the Instant Ink servers.

Sync the Account via HP Smart

  • Open the HP Smart app on your device and ensure you are logged into your account.
  • Select your printer and look for the Account or Instant Ink tile to trigger a manual refresh.
  • If the printer shows as "Offline" in the app despite being on Wi-Fi, use the Diagnose & Fix tool within the app settings to repair the connection path.

Please refer to the HP Instant Ink - Printer Not Connected message guide.

Are you able to successfully print the "Web Services Info Page" after following the steps to re-enable it?

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
