HP ENVY 5640 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

Ive got a Instant Ink plan.. today I noticed ive got the following message on my printer display

Connect Printer to update HP Instant Ink. Printing will be locked very soon.

Ive done various recommendations from posts on here...  re enabled my payment details etc just in case that was a problem. I only EVER install the ink cartridges that form part of my plan as well.

Im worried that my printer will stop actually printing now with the message thats appeared?

Just seem to be going round in circles & getting no where 🙄

Would anyone be kind enough to give me a push as the best course of action. I can print but not until ive cleared the error message above physically from the printer display

Still getting the same error message on the printer dashboard 🙄

But when I press the "ok" it prints fine,  which means every time I send documents from laptop to printer I have to press the printer, which is hardly ideal, plus I also need to know that my printer wont be blocked neither.... any helpful folks out there that can be any ideas please 😁

Hi @Corsababe

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are facing printing issues and see the error message: "Connect Printer to update HP Instant Ink. Printing will be locked very soon." This appears because your printer is not connected to Wi-Fi to sync with HP servers.

Check Internet Connection

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Network/Wireless Settings.
  • Verify that Wi-Fi is turned on and connected to your home network.
  • If disconnected:
  • Select Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
  • Test by printing a Network Configuration Page (usually under Reports/Settings).

Reconnect to HP Account

  • Open the HP App on your phone or computer. https://www.hp.com/us-en/hp-app/overview.html
  • Sign in with the same HP account linked to your Instant Ink subscription.
  • In the app, select your printer → Instant Ink → confirm that your plan shows as active.
  • If prompted, re-enter your HP account credentials directly on the printer screen.

Update Payment Details

  • In the HP Smart app or on the HP Instant Ink website, go to Account → Payment Information.
  • Ensure your card or payment method is valid and not expired.
  • Save changes and confirm that your plan status updates to “Active.”

Firmware/Software Update

  • On the printer:
  • Go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update Printer.
  • Select Check for Updates.
  • In the HP App:
  • Tap your printer → Advanced Settings → look for firmware updates.
  • Install any available updates, then restart the printer.

Restart Printer and Router

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 30 seconds.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi router to refresh the connection.
  • Power the printer back on and let it reconnect automatically.
