I accidentally reset my printer, I’m trying to set it back up but it won’t let me because I only have HP Instant Ink Cartridges. It says, “Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink”. If I take the cartridges out it says, “One or more cartridges are missing or damaged. Until cartridges are replaced make sure the printer is turned on to avoid damage to the printer”. I’m not sure how I can sign back in or set up the printer again

@Parker43, Welcome to HP Support Community,

It sounds like you’ve got a bit of a tricky situation with your HP Instant Ink setup! No worries, I can walk you through how to get everything up and running again. Here are the steps you can follow:

1. Check Your Printer’s Connection

  • Make sure your printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network. If you reset it, it may have lost its network connection.
  • If it’s a Wi-Fi setup issue, you can either use the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button method or connect through the printer’s control panel to re-enter your Wi-Fi settings.

2. Access HP Instant Ink Setup

  • Go to the HP Instant Ink website.
  • Sign in with your HP account, or create one if you don’t have one.
  • Follow the prompts to add your printer to your HP Instant Ink account.
  • Enter your printer’s serial number (usually found on the back or bottom of the printer

3. Reinstall the HP Instant Ink Cartridges

  • Since your printer is requiring you to be enrolled in HP Instant Ink to use the cartridges, you should ensure that the printer is successfully enrolled and connected to your HP Instant Ink account.
  • Place the Instant Ink cartridges back in the printer after logging into your HP Instant Ink account. The printer should now recognize them once the setup is complete.

4. Printer Setup via HP Smart App (Optional)

  • You can also use the HP Smart App to help manage printer settings and re-enroll the printer.
    • Download and install the HP Smart app on your mobile device or computer.
    • Open the app, sign in with your HP account, and it should automatically detect your printer.
    • Follow the instructions in the app to enroll your printer in HP Instant Ink.

5. Check Printer Settings on the Display

  • If you have access to the printer's control panel, navigate through the setup options on the printer's display to ensure the printer is connected to Wi-Fi and that it's set to use HP Instant Ink.

6. HP Instant Ink Subscription

  • Ensure that your HP Instant Ink subscription is active. You can check this by logging into your account on the HP Instant Ink website. If there are any issues with your subscription (e.g., expired or inactive), you can resolve them here.

Thank you! Unfortunately, I’m not able to access the printer’s control panel at all because of the messages popping up about the instant ink. Is there anything else I can try?

@Parker43,

Thank you for your response

Try performing these steps:

Restart the Printer and Computer

  • Remove the cartridges.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
  • Reinstall the cartridges.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
