Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER

I bought an HP printer and when I bought it, HP Spain gave me a free subscription for some months, during that time they sent me a cartridge, but when I was going to finish the free months I cancelled the subscription. Now, I cannot print with the last cartridge and I contacted HP Spain to help me with that, and during the conversation they said that the cartridge I have into the printer will not work because I cancelled the subscription.

Really? I am forced to pay them a subscription that I don't want if I want that the printer works? I have in my printer a complete cartridge and it will not work if I don't pay the subscription. Is it legal? I want you to help me with this issue from HP USA, otherwise I will report HP Spain to the Court and to "Consumo" for abusive actions. Nobody can force to pay a subscription for using a printer that I already payed, and it is abusive to force to do that.

@Jc1976bcn, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand how frustrating that situation feels — especially since you still have ink left in the cartridge. Let me clarify how this works so there’s no confusion.

The cartridge you currently have installed is an HP Instant Ink subscription cartridge. These cartridges are specially coded to work only while an Instant Ink plan is active. Once a subscription is canceled or expires, those cartridges automatically become inactive and can’t be used to print — even if they still contain ink. This is because they are part of the Instant Ink service, not a standard retail purchase.

If you prefer not to continue with the subscription, no problem — you’re absolutely free to print without it. You just need to replace those Instant Ink cartridges with regular HP genuine cartridges (the standard retail versions for your printer model). Once you install standard cartridges, your printer will work normally without any subscription.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
