My printer randomly stopped mid-project and says "Cannot Print. Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status." I have tried everything and cannot get it to work.

Hi @andrealeonor

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'd like to help you with your Instant Ink issue.

I understand the situation clearly: your printer has stopped mid-project and is showing the message “Cannot Print. Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status.” Let’s go step by step with official HP guidance to get this resolved.

Check Internet Connection

  • Ensure the printer is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network.
  • If using Ethernet, confirm the cable is securely connected.
  • Test by printing a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel to verify connectivity.

Update HP Instant Ink Status via HP App

  • Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  • Sign in with the same HP account registered for Instant Ink.
  • From the app’s home screen, select your printer.
  • Look for any Instant Ink notifications and follow the prompts to refresh the status.

Restart Devices

  • Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
  • Restart your computer as well.
  • After restart, open the HP App again and check if the Instant Ink status updates.

Check HP Account Subscription

  • In the HP App, go to Instant Ink settings.
  • Verify that your subscription is active and the payment method is valid.
  • If required, click Update Status to sync the printer with HP servers.

Firmware Update

  • In the HP App, navigate to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.
  • Install any available updates. This ensures the printer communicates correctly with HP Instant Ink services.

Re-add Printer in HP App

  • If the issue persists, remove the printer from the HP App.
  • Then add it back by selecting Add Printer and following the guided setup.
  • This refreshes the connection between your printer and HP Instant Ink.

The message indicates that the printer is unable to confirm its Instant Ink status. By ensuring network connectivity, refreshing the status through the HP App, restarting devices, verifying subscription details, updating firmware, and re-adding the printer, the issue should be resolved. All steps are official HP procedures designed to restore printing functionality.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
