@jwguns,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

A very good question.

And no, you do not need a subscription to continue printing, provided you own the printer hardware and use standard, store-bought cartridges.

However, your ability to print without a subscription depends entirely on which HP service you are currently using and the type of ink installed in the machine.

HP Instant Ink Subscriptions:

If you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink, you are paying for a monthly page allotment rather than the ink itself.

  • The Catch: Any ink cartridges sent to you by HP via this subscription will stop working immediately once your billing cycle ends after cancellation. They are digitally locked by HP servers.
  • How to Print Free: To resume printing without a monthly fee, you must completely cancel the subscription on the HP Instant Ink Portal, physically remove the subscription cartridges, and install standard, retail-purchased Original HP cartridges, such as available via Amazon for example.

HP+ ("e" Series) Printers:

If your printer model ends with an "e" (such as the HP Envy 6055e) and you activated HP+ during the initial setup, you are bound by a permanent hardware agreement.
  • Subscription Requirements: HP+ itself does not necessarily require a monthly subscription fee. You can safely opt out of or cancel the Instant Ink trial.
  • The Restriction: However, by activating HP+, you permanently agree to keep the printer connected to the internet and exclusively use genuine Original HP ink. The printer will permanently block third-party remanufactured or refilled ink cartridges.

HP All-In Plan:

And then there is the newer HP All-In Plan. If you signed up for that, you do not actually own the printer. It is sort of a hardware rental service. If you cancel this subscription, you must physically return the printer to HP or face early termination fees, meaning you cannot use it at all.

Anyway, to give you the most accurate advice, could you let me know your exact HP printer model number and if you are currently using the ink cartridges that came in a subscription box?

Kind Regards,
