We have summer property in Maine that we leave in the Fall to return to Texas until next year's summer,  I remove the cartridges and carefully seal them and take home, then bring them back next summer to reinstall.  I also unplug the printer and many other devices to protect them from electric issues during the winter, and with no winter heating.  I plan to reinstall last years cartridges, turn on printer, and go online to HP Print to reactivate the subscription.  HP status shows printer is offline right now.

Is this the proper procedure?

Hi @dsttexas

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand your situation clearly. You are storing the printer for several months without heating or power, and you want to ensure proper reactivation when you return.

Your approach of removing and sealing the cartridges, unplugging the printer, and planning to reconnect next summer is appropriate. Below are the recommended HP steps to follow for smooth reactivation:

Before Storage (Fall):

  • Remove the ink cartridges, place them in a sealed plastic bag, and store them in a cool, dry place.
  • Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  • Disconnect any network cables or USB connections.

During Storage (Winter):

  • Keep cartridges upright and avoid exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Ensure the printer is stored in a dry environment to prevent condensation damage.

Reactivation (Summer):

  • Reconnect the printer to power and turn it on.
  • Reinstall the cartridges carefully into their respective slots.
  • Connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network or computer.
  • Open the HP App on your Windows or Mac device.
  • Sign in with your HP account and verify the printer is online.
  • If the printer shows “offline,” run Diagnose & Fix from the HP App to automatically resolve connectivity issues.
  • Once online, your HP Instant Ink subscription will reactivate automatically. If needed, sign in at https://instantink.hpconnected.com to confirm status.

Summary: Your current procedure is correct. The key points are sealing cartridges properly, unplugging the printer, and using the HP App with Diagnose & Fix to bring the printer back online. After that, the subscription will resume without issue.

This ensures your printer is protected during storage and ready for use when you return.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
