Hello, I have recently replaced my hp printer which was supplied with hp instant ink cartridges. These cartridges were not empty when the printer broke down. I intend to take the printer to my recycling centre tomorrow. Would I recycle the ink cartridges by removing and sending back to hp ( ie would this be messy?) or leave in the printer for the recycling centre to deal with? Thanks!

When recycling your HP printer, it's important to manage the used cartridges properly, especially if they are part of the HP Instant Ink program.
 

Remove the Cartridges: It is generally recommended to remove the ink cartridges from the printer before bringing it to a recycling center. This helps ensure that the cartridges are recycled responsibly and may prevent a mess during transport.

Recycle HP Instant Ink Cartridges: As HP Instant Ink cartridges are the property of HP, they should be returned to HP when they are empty or if you decide to cancel the service. You can return these cartridges using the recycling envelope or prepaid shipping label included with your last shipment of replacement supplies. If you do not have a return envelope or label, you can order more through your Instant Ink account page or from the HP Planet Partners website.
 

• Ink Cartridges: Wait until you have several cartridges to return before shipping them back to maximize environmental benefits.
   
• Toner Cartridges: Use a prepaid shipping label to return the cartridges in a used Instant Ink box or other suitable container.

Prepare the Printer: Before recycling the printer itself, it’s a good practice to remove any cartridges and ensure that the printer is removed from any HP or HP Instant Ink accounts.

Hi,

I had a similar situation not long ago. Since they’re HP Instant Ink cartridges, they usually belong to HP under the subscription, so it’s better to take them out and send them back using the prepaid return envelope if you have one.

It shouldn’t be messy as long as you keep them upright and maybe pop them into a small plastic bag just in case. I personally wouldn’t leave them in the printer for the recycling centre, as they might not process them the right way. I  always try to be careful with electronic waste like this. For anything larger than cartridges that the prepaid envelope won't take , I've found that using Fast Junk Experts is the most reliable way to ensure it's recycled properly and quickly
