I want to use my old HP ENVY 5540 offline as just a copier.   I have replaced it with an HP ENVY 6230 on my Instant Ink account, and am using purchased HP ink cartridges.   I can't find a way of stopping it giving me error messages that it needs to contact HP online..

This seems like an update was interrupted, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:  

Let's prepare your printer for a wireless connection, and restart the printer, computer, and router. 

  1. Turn the printer off, and then wait 10 seconds. 
  2. Disconnect the printer power cord from the printer. 
  3. Turn off the computer or the device you are trying to print from. 
  4. Connect the printer power cord to the printer, and then turn on the printer. 
  5. Disconnect the power cord from your wireless router, and then wait 10 seconds. 
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the router. Wait until Internet service is restored. Internet service is interrupted while the router is off. 
  7. Turn on the computer.

Thanks Echo.   This old printer is now a mile away from my router, with no internet access at all.   If it ceases to work again, I'll bring it home and try your suggestion.
