I am trying to replace a printer.  I have an instant ink account but linked to the old (now defunct printer).   I keep getting asked to put in a claim code for the replacement printer but not sure where to find this or print it off?   It also comes up with can’t print as not linked to an HP smart ink subscription hence I am going round in circles.   Please help

Hi @Loz1001,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it feels, like running in circles, when you’re excited to get printing again but keep hitting a wall with that mysterious claim code. Let’s fix this gently and step-by-step, so you're back to printing your work without more looping around.

What is this "claim code", and why do you need it?

The claim code is a unique string that ties your new printer to your HP Instant Ink account. It’s especially needed for printers released before 2020. Once you enable Web Services, it will either print on a page or display on the touchscreen. This code then confirms your ownership and activates your subscription on the new device.

Step 1: Enable Web Services on the new printer

Make sure your printer is connected to the internet (Wi‑Fi, not USB). Then:

  • Touchscreen printers: Go to SetupWeb ServicesTurn On
    • The printer will print an Information page with your ePrint email address and the claim code shown either on the sheet or the control panel.
  • Button-based printers: Press ePrint + Info (or Cancel + Info) together to print the page.

Step 2: Locate the claim code

Check the printed Web Services Information page.

  • The claim code usually appears right under the @hpeprint.com ePrint address.
  • On some printers, it may show directly on the control panel after enabling services.

Step 3: Enter the claim code

  • During Instant Ink enrollment, when the HP Smart app asks for the code, carefully type it in.
  • If you're setting it up manually:
    1. Open the HP Smart app (or go to 123.hp.com).
    2. Choose Add Printer or Enter Claim Code.
    3. Input your code and follow the prompts to finish setup.

Step 4: If it still loops or errors

Try resetting Web Services to generate a fresh claim code:

  • Go back to your printer’s Web Services menu, turn it off, then on again.
  • Print another Information page, find the new claim code, and enter it again.
This usually clears any stuck link between the printer and the account.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
