A couple of places to check...
The Instant Ink subscription is not transferable - that is, you cannot sell the subscription with the printer.
Instant Ink cartridges only work while the plan subscription is active (and the printer is in possession of the subscriber).
Reminder:
After the Instant Ink subscription is cancelled, remove all Instant Ink cartridges from the printer and return them to HP.
Next,
Purchase and install a fresh set of HP cartridges to use in the printer.
