Hello community!
HP "Instant Ink" wants to charge me for more ink and paper than I want/need and I don't want to pay recurring charges anymore. When I just today cancelled my Instant Ink refill plan it seems to indicate I can never print again with this printer or I will be charged again? WHAT??
So my printer will be disabled for printing at all once I escape this trap? Feels like I've been tricked into a permanent and ongoing money grab and HP wants to drain my wallet forever!?
HELP!!!

Hi @AwwComeOn,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Instant Ink!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
HP Instant Ink is a subscription service. Instead of buying ink cartridges in the store, you pay a monthly fee based on how many pages you print. HP sends you new ink when you’re running low, and you return the used cartridges. It's designed for convenience and potentially saving money, but only if your printing habits align with the plan.
What happens when you cancel?
Here's the key point:
If you cancel your Instant Ink plan, the ink cartridges that came through the service will stop working, even if they’re full.
Why? Because HP Instant Ink cartridges are not regular retail cartridges. They're specially coded to work only while you have an active subscription. HP monitors them online, and once your subscription ends, they are deactivated to prevent further use.
You are NOT locked out of using the printer forever.
You just need to:
Remove the Instant Ink cartridges
Buy regular HP ink cartridges from a store or HP's official website
Install those cartridges, and you’re good to go, no subscription is required.
I hope this helps.
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍✨
