Best answer, don't EVER use instant ink. It is NOT cost effective and if you decided to stop the subscription they PREVENT YOU from using the remaining ink in the cartridge you already PAID for!!! In the end I paid about $200 for 3 cartridges and no paper. I have two cartridges IN THE PRINTER that HP blocked from working. Talk about petty!!!! Then they have the nerve to charge a last month payment AFTER ending the subscription. Just DON"T.

The above is one of the biggest misconceptions regarding the Instant Ink program. When you sign up for the Instant Ink program you are NOT purchasing ink, you are purchasing a subscription to a set number of pages per month. The ink is supplied, but remains the property of HP and must be returned if you cancel the program in accordance with the terms of service. See sections 5.d and 9.c of the terms of service here.
The Instant Ink billing is in arrears. Once you cancel your subscription you will receive a final bill after the subscription ends. See section 9 of the terms of service link above.
Depending on what you print and how often the HP Instant Ink program may be better, worse, or about the same as buying retail cartridges.
