After paying over $5 for 4 years, I needed to save some money so I canceled my subscription.  It's total BS that I can't use my printer!   I have paid $500 for nothing from HP.  I will never buy a HP product again!

@JoeRusher,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Your HP printer stopped working because HP Instant Ink cartridges are programmed to lock automatically when a subscription ends.  That's how HP has set it up.

When you cancel the service, the printer blocks the use of any Instant Ink cartridges remaining in the device, even if they still contain ink.

To restore your printing capabilities immediately, follow the guide below.

Why Your Printer is Locked:

  • Rental Model: The monthly fee pays for the printed pages, not the physical ink inside the cartridges.
  • DRM Chips: Instant Ink cartridges feature digital rights management chips that deactivate upon cancellation.
  • Hardware Ownership: You still own the printer hardware, but you lose the right to use the subscription ink.

How to Fix the Issue:

  1. Remove subscription cartridges: Take out all ink cartridges provided by the HP Instant Ink program.
  2. Purchase standard ink: Buy regular, non-subscription HP cartridges from a retail store or online.
  3. Install new cartridges: Place the standard retail cartridges into your printer.
  4. Resume printing: The printer will instantly unlock and function normally sans any monthly fees.

If you'd like to get your printer running again right now, let me know:

  • Your printer model number (so I can find the exact retail ink cartridge part numbers you need).
  • If you see any specific error codes on the screen.

I can help you find the most affordable, compatible standard ink options for you.

Kind Regards,
