I'm trying to enroll in your All-In Plan, I have a Direct Express Debit Card which I had used previously with HP, now it says "This card type is not accepted". How can this be? It's a regular debit card, not a prepaid or gift card.

Hi Mvcg66b3r,

Welcome to the HP Community! I am a new volunteer here participating in the HP Solve-a-thon, and I am happy to help shed some light on this payment error.

I completely understand how incredibly frustrating it is to be blocked by a payment portal, especially when you are using a card that has successfully worked with HP in the past!

The confusion here actually stems from how financial networks classify your card behind the scenes, rather than how you use it in your daily life. Here is exactly what is causing the system to reject the enrollment:

The Direct Express Classification

While your Direct Express card functions identically to a regular debit card for everyday purchases and ATM withdrawals, the underlying payment networks (like Mastercard or Visa) officially code it as a prepaid benefits card at the Bank Identification Number (BIN) level.

Why Subscription Services Reject It

HP’s recurring subscription services, like the All-In Plan and Instant Ink, have strict billing gateways designed to reject prepaid cards. This is a standard practice for ongoing subscriptions to ensure a continuous line of credit or a traditional checking account is attached to the recurring monthly fee.

Why It Worked Previously

Payment processors and merchants frequently update their security rules and BIN databases. It is highly likely that your Direct Express card previously slipped through an older payment gateway as a standard debit card, but HP's updated subscription system is now correctly identifying its "prepaid" network tag and blocking it.

How to Move Forward

Since the All-In Plan cannot override this automated system rejection, here are the best workarounds to get enrolled:

  • The PayPal Bridge: Check if the checkout page offers PayPal as a payment option. You can often link your Direct Express card to a standard PayPal account and use PayPal to seamlessly subscribe to HP services.

  • Alternative Bank Card: If PayPal is not an option, you will need to use a standard checking account debit card or a major credit card to complete the initial enrollment.

I hope this helps clear up the mystery behind the error message!
