I bought this used printer HP OfficeJet Pro 9129e from a local Facebook Marketplace seller, but could not enroll it into my account because it’s still on the previous owners account. How do I get it to my account?

Thanks.

Hi @testdafewqrewqd,

I understand you bought a used HP OfficeJet Pro 9129e and cannot register it because it is still linked to the previous owner’s account. Let’s go through a few steps to explain why this happens and what you can do.

Understand HP+ account locking
The OfficeJet Pro 9129e is an HP+-capable printer.
Once enrolled, HP+ permanently links the printer to the first owner’s HP account.

Try a factory reset (confirmation step)
From the printer control panel, restore factory defaults if the option is available.
If setup still says the printer is registered to another account, this confirms HP+ is active.

Know what a reset cannot do
A factory reset removes settings but does not remove HP+ ownership.
This is why the printer cannot be enrolled into a new account by the new owner.

Have the previous owner remove the printer
The original owner must sign in to their HP account.
They need to remove the printer from their account under “My Printers” or “Devices.”

Retry setup after removal
Once the printer is removed from the previous account, restart the printer.
Run setup again using HP Smart and enroll it into your own HP account.

If the previous owner cannot be contacted
HP+ printers cannot be transferred without the original owner’s action.
In this case, the printer cannot be registered to a new account.

What this means practically
The printer can remain blocked from HP+ features and enrollment if not released.
Returning the printer to the seller is often the only workable option if they cannot remove it.

This behavior is a limitation of HP+ printers and not a setup or software fault. The printer must be released from the original account before it can be added to yours.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi,

I understand this completely. My next question is, this sounds like a big waste as the printer is almost new and still functioning. Do you mean that the printer itself is basically a junk to be land-filled now? I'm pretty surprised this is how HP handles its product.

Can you please confirm with some higher-tier manager that there is really nothing we can do with the printer? For any well designed system, there should be a way to manually revoke the registration and re-register under a different account with adequate proof of ownership. For example, what if an user loses access to his account? Or the family member doesn't have access to a deceased owner's account? There must be a way. I can provide proof of my purchase and I can ask the seller to prove this is not a stolen one.

Best,

Howard.
