Using a regular ink cartridge after enrolling in instant ink

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just enrolled in Instant Ink.  My printer and laptop had been working perfectly until today. Today I replaced an empty cartridge with  a regular cartridge (don't want to waste it; I've just gotten the first instant ink - still in box).  Now I can't print.  Get this message:  "Printer in an error state".   Is that being caused because I used my regular cartridge?  Thanks!
