What printer model?  You can use retail cartridges, but there are some consideraations:

  • Pages printed with *any* Instant Ink cartridges (or Instant Ink Ready setup cartridges) installed will count toward your monthly usage.  If your printer uses two cartridges (a black and tri-color) the pages will be counted if either cartridge is an Instant Ink cartridge.  You could replace both cartridges with retail cartridges, then the pages you print will not be counted against the monthly usage.  Alternately, with a printer that uses two cartridges, the printer will typically operate in single-cartridge mode.  For example, if the color cartridge is removed and a retail black cartridge installed the printer can print in b&w and the pages will not count against the monthly usage.  Similarly, if you purchase just a color cartridge you could print with the black Instant Ink Ready cartridge removed, the printer would mix colors when black is needed.
  • Once the Instant Ink cartridges arrive, you can either install then and store the retail cartridges for later, or continue to use the retail cartridge(s) until the first is depleted.  If you use the retail cartridge(s) with no Instant Ink or Instant Ink Ready cartridges installed the pages you print will not count toward your usage and can be rolled over for future months (depending on your plan).
  • When retail cartridges are installed in the printer the Instant Ink program will not be notified of the ink levels and automatic shipments will not be triggered.  Make sure the initial Instant Ink cartridges are scheduled for shipment before installing retail cartridges.
