Hi @Ginjin

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That’s a good question, and it usually comes down to the type of cartridges you’re using. Could you tell me which printer model you have and whether the ink cartridges are labeled as Instant Ink or standard HP cartridges?

Here’s the key difference:

  • Instant Ink cartridges are not regular cartridges. They’re tied to HP’s subscription program. They only function when the printer is actively enrolled in the Instant Ink service.

  • With Instant Ink, you don’t pay for the cartridges themselves—you pay a monthly fee based on the number of pages you print. HP then sends replacement cartridges as needed, but those cartridges are “contract-bound” and stop working if the subscription is canceled.

  • If you want the printer to work without a subscription, you’ll need standard retail HP cartridges (the ones you buy outright from a store or online).

So, if your printer isn’t working without a contract, it’s likely because it currently has Instant Ink cartridges installed.

Do you know if your printer is enrolled in Instant Ink right now, or are you trying to use cartridges that came from that program?

Originally, we subscribed to the replacement program, but we were sent a cartridge of a different model, or didn,t fit.  Replied to HP that the wrong cartridge was sent.. No reply, no other sent.

replaced with an HP cartridge.  It worked for a few months.  Now it's not working with notes that we are not enrolled in the program, and to contact HP.
