My printer won't print.  I shows "very low" black ink, but won't print anything.  I've never had to wait to get a new cartridge

AFTER my printer ran out of ink.  Could there be a problem with my printer?  I hate to think I have to go buy a new cartridge, when I pay monthly for it already, but it's saying I won't get a new cartridge for 10 more days.

@Terrilynne0915, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Low Ink Levels and Ink Replacement for HP Printers!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It's concerning to run out of ink unexpectedly, and it's crucial to understand why your printer isn't printing even though it shows "very low" black ink. Here are some potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

Automatic Cartridge Replacement:

  • If you are part of an HP Instant Ink subscription, you should typically receive new cartridges before your current ones run out. Delays can sometimes occur, but 10 more days seems unusual.
  • Check your HP Instant Ink account to ensure your subscription is active and your shipping details are correct.

Low Ink Handling in Printers:

  • HP printers are designed to notify you well in advance if ink levels are low.
  • However, if the ink level is too low, the printer might prevent printing to avoid print quality issues and potential damage to the printheads.

Temporary Solutions:

  • Try removing the ink cartridge and gently shaking it. This can sometimes redistribute the ink and allow for a few more prints.
  • Clean the printhead, as sometimes maintenance is required to restore proper ink flow.

Manual Ink Management:

  • To prevent such scenarios, keep an extra set of ink cartridges handy, especially if you regularly engage in high-volume printing.
  • In the future, consider swapping in a fresh cartridge as soon as the printer gives a low ink warning if you expect to be away or unable to quickly replace it.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
