cartridge problem

hp officejet 5740
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer has started printing in poor colours.The Print Quality Diagnostic  shows the colour block for Magenta as white which suggests that the cartridge is at  the end of its life. The diagnostics also show  that the cartridge still contains coloured ink which means that the system will not replace the cartridge which it should do under my monthly plan. Catch 22 22? Do I just cancel and go back to the old system of purchase?
