I have recently cancelled my Instant Ink subscription, as I have replaced my printer and donated my HP one to a local charity. They just want to copy documents (no wifi, and no need for printing), so I have installed new 'non-instant ink' cartridges.
The printer wont work, and is asking them to "connect printer to update HP instant Ink status". Any ideas on how we can overcome this problem?

Hi @colden,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the printer is asking to connect to update the HP Instant Ink status and you’ve recently canceled your Instant Ink subscription and installed new cartridges, you may need to take some additional steps to resolve this issue. Here’s a guide to help you get the printer functioning:
1. Reset the Printer's Ink System
- Turn On the Printer: Ensure the printer is powered on.
- Open Cartridge Access Door: Open the door to access the ink cartridges.
- Remove Cartridges: Carefully remove the ink cartridges.
- Close the Door: Close the cartridge access door.
- Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall outlet.
- Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds.
- Reconnect and Power On: Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.
2. Install New Cartridges
- Open Cartridge Access Door: Open the door to access the ink cartridges.
- Insert New Cartridges: Reinstall the new cartridges that are not from the Instant Ink program.
- Close the Door: Close the cartridge access door securely.
3. Perform a Printer Reset
- Turn On the Printer: Make sure the printer is on.
- Reset:
- For HP Printers: Go to the Setup menu on the printer’s control panel.
- Navigate to: Look for an option like Settings, Printer Maintenance, or Factory Reset.
- Follow Prompts: Follow the on-screen instructions to perform a reset.
4. Update Printer Firmware
- Visit HP Support: Go to the HP Support website.
- Download Firmware: Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware if available.
- Install Firmware: Follow the instructions to install the firmware update.
5. Clear Instant Ink Settings
- HP Smart App: If you have access to the HP Smart app on a computer or mobile device, open it.
- Select Your Printer: Choose your printer from the list.
- Manage Settings: Look for options to manage or clear the Instant Ink settings.
- Update Status: Update the printer status or settings as needed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
