I am getting a message on my printer that says A problem has occurred with your HP account and you will be unable to print until the issue is resolved.  I have not purchased the cartridges, as my credit card was comprimised.  I am sure this is the issue.  What do I do?

@SFisher1977,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

As you figured out yourself, this message indicates that your HP Instant Ink subscription has been suspended because the monthly billing charge failed.

Since your credit card was compromised and canceled, HP was unable to automatically process your subscription payment. Because Instant Ink cartridges are monitored remotely via Wi-Fi, the system automatically locks the cartridges from printing as soon as a payment is declined or marked as delinquent.

You do not need to buy new physical cartridges right now. You simply need to update your payment method to unblock the current cartridges or bypass the program entirely.

Here is exactly how to resolve the issue:

Option 1: Update Your Billing Info to Resume the Subscription:

If you want to keep using the Instant Ink service with the cartridges currently inside your printer, you must provide your new replacement credit card.

  • Go directly to the official HP Instant Ink Sign-In page.
  • Log in using your HP account credentials (email and password).
  • Click Account on the left menu, then select Billing or Shipping & Billing.
  • Click Manage your payment method (or Change Payment Method).
  • Re-enter all requested data manually (the new card number, expiration date, and CVV code).
  • Note: It can take up to 30 minutes after saving the new card for HP's servers to re-authenticate and push the unlock command to your printer over Wi-Fi.
  • Here is a relevant HP user post: Instant Ink Account needs attention or Update payment method... - HP Support Community - 7160658.

Option 2: Buy Your Own Ink and Cancel the Plan:

If you prefer to break free from the subscription entirely and use regular, store-bought ink, you must physically remove the tracked subscription cartridges.

  • Buy standard retail HP ink cartridges matching your printer model at a local store or online retailer.
  • Open the printer door and remove all current cartridges that say "Instant Ink" or "Subscription" on the label.
  • Insert your new store-bought cartridges. The account lock message on the printer screen will immediately vanish, as standard retail cartridges do not require billing authorization to function.
  • Go back to your online account dashboard to officially cancel your Instant Ink plan so you aren't charged retroactive fees once a payment method is re-established.

Kind Regards,
