since the HP toner is so expensive and my printer is out of warantee, I bought off brand toner and the printer won't print because it doesn't have the HP chip.  I heard there is a way to change the printer settings to have it accept the toner.    Can someone help with directions?

Also, this would not be necessary if HP didn't charge such high prices for the toner.

I do not see where you mentioned your Printer Model and Operating System/version.

If you did, I may have missed it, or your message failed to include that information.

True - Ink made for the printer is expensive.

True, too -- There is no legal method to bypass the onboard security that protects the printer.

-- Reminder for those reading --

In spite of the persistent rumors:  "Cartridge Protection" is not meant  -- and cannot be used -- to "unlock" the printer so it can use non-HP ink (no HP-chip).

Cartridge Protection is a different animal and is not related to Dynamic Security that protects the printer from non-HP ink products.

If you are using one of the HP Laser Printers that allows for non-HP Toner cartridges, the policy settings governing the use of toner in the printer are explained in the printer's user guide.

-- What is? --

HP has for years protected its inkjet printers using security that requires all ink used in the printer to include an embedded HP chip.

There is no legal method to override the protection that requires HP inkjet printers to use ink cartridges that include an embedded HP chip.

In particular, if you have enabled any HP services that require HP genuine ink (for example, HP Instant Ink or HP+), refilled / remanufactured cartridges, even those that include the HP chip, are not going to work at all.

HP has named the printer protection "Dynamic Security".

-- Note --

Other companies that protect their printers' ink systems use a different name for the security.

The indicated cartridges have been blocked by the printer firmware because they contain a non-HP chip or non-HP circuitry. This printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have new or reused HP chips or circuitry.

Replace the indicated cartridges to continue printing. For more information, go to www.hp.com/learn/ds.

Note:

HP ENVY Inspire 7200 and 7900 series printers: Use of non-HP cartridges with modified or non-HP electronic circuitry might cause the printer to reject Original HP cartridges and reused, remanufactured, and Refilled cartridges that reuse HP electronic circuitry. From the printer control panel, go to Setup > Tools > Restore Defaults to continue printing.
