There is always a couple pages more in the HP count. today I print 19 pages one side but the count in the HP apps says 22. Last time was about the same. I print 4 but in HP says 6.

Hi @Luciano2901,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP app showing a higher page count than the number of pages you actually printed. Let’s go through why this happens — it’s usually normal printer behavior.

HP counts “sides processed,” not just documents printed
Most HP printers count every sheet movement through the print engine, including:

Cleaning cycles

Alignment pages

Cancelled jobs

Test prints

Blank feeds
So printing 19 pages can sometimes increase the count by 22 or more.

Maintenance and calibration pages are included
Ink and laser printers periodically run automatic servicing cycles to keep print quality stable.
These cycles can advance the internal page counter even if no visible page prints.

Duplex or re-feed operations can add counts
If the printer briefly pulls paper or retries feeding, the printer may increment the counter even if the page isn’t printed successfully.

HP Smart app reflects the printer’s internal counter
The HP app simply reads the hardware page counter stored in the printer firmware.
It is not calculated from the print jobs sent from the computer.

Small differences are normal
Differences of 1–3 pages per print session are considered normal due to:

Initialization routines

Cartridge servicing

Paper-feed retries

I hope this helps.

It is neither normal nor correct to have 1 to 3 extra pages on a printer's page counter. Either HP doesn't know how to count pages on a printer, or the support agent doesn't know what they're talking about (no offense intended). It's probably a customer service agent (looking for any excuse to 'fix' a problem).

Now, what he is right about is what he explains regarding the "every sheet movement through the printer engine':

After several times, and in my case, it could be different in other cases, I realize that every time the printer runs out of paper (or thinks it does not have), that is when these 1 to 3 additional pages appear in the page count.

But again, this is not right and should not be considered normal either. HP should fix this because we, as users, are paying for a certain number of pages and we need to get exactly what we are paying for. (I would love to see what a lawyer thinks about it)

Can you imagine paying for 10 pages, and by chance you ran out of paper 2-3 times? This could mean that during the month, 3 to 9 pages are wasted due to how they count them, and you would only be able to print 1 page. Do you really think this is normal?

Sorry but I do not.

I hope they don't get mad or delete my post or my account.

Hi,

Thank you for the feedback.

I understand your concern about the printer page counter increasing when the printer runs out of paper and why that feels incorrect, especially when you are tracking page usage closely.

The earlier explanation was not suggesting incorrect counting is acceptable.

It was meant to explain that the printer increments the counter when a sheet is fed into the print path.

When the printer runs out of paper mid-job, the pickup attempt can still be registered by the print engine.

This can appear as extra pages in the lifetime counter even though no printed page was produced.

Let’s go through a few checks.

Verify How Page Counters Work

Print a printer status report from the printer control panel.

Locate the Total Page Count value.

Print one single-page document.

Print the report again and confirm the counter increases by one.

Note: The internal page counter is a hardware lifetime counter and cannot be reset or manually adjusted.

Check Paper Feed Reliability

Load a sufficient stack of paper before printing.

Adjust the paper guides so they lightly touch the paper.

Use clean, flat paper only.

Avoid letting the printer run out of paper during active jobs.

Confirm Subscription Page Usage (if applicable)

Sign in to your Instant Ink account in a browser.

Check the monthly page usage value.

Compare it with your actual printed pages.

Verify whether subscription usage matches printed output.

Note: Subscription page usage is calculated from completed print jobs, not from the internal lifetime counter.

I hope this helps.
