Hi @mjm358 ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand your printer showing a large difference between page count and actual printed pages. Let’s go through a few checks.

HP printers often track sheets of paper rather than logical pages, meaning every piece of paper that passes through the machine counts, even if it is blank, a test page, or part of a faulty print job.

I hope this helps.

Check Internal Maintenance Usage

  1. Printers perform automatic cleaning cycles.
  2. These cycles may use ink and sometimes paper.
  3. Alignment pages after cartridge changes are counted.
  4. Firmware updates can trigger calibration prints.
  5. These are included in total page count.

Compare with Paper Usage

  1. Paper count (what you remember printing) may only include documents.
  2. Drafts, reprints, and test prints add to actual usage.
  3. Misprints or jams may consume paper without being noticed.
  4. Duplex (double-sided) prints count as 2 pages.
  5. Print preview vs actual output may differ.

Check Print History (If Needed)

  1. On your computer, open printer settings.
  2. Enable “Keep printed documents” (if not already).
  3. Review print queue history.
  4. Check for repeated or background print jobs.
  5. Monitor future usage for accuracy.

Note:
A noticeable difference is usually due to maintenance prints, test pages, and internal processes, not an error. If the gap is extremely large in a short time, it may indicate frequent cleaning cycles or repeated print jobs.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,

I'm an HP Employee.
