There is nothing to release, after you cancel you ink subscription you need to remove the used ink and buy a new ink cartridges to continue printing.

What @Valsimot is saying is that when an HP Instant Ink subscription is canceled, the Instant Ink smart cartridges are remotely disabled at the end of the billing cycle. Even if the cartridges still have plenty of ink, they cannot be used for printing once the service is inactive. HP owns these specific cartridges, whilst the user owns the printer itself.

To "release" the printer and resume printing, you simply need to remove the Instant Ink cartridges and purchase standard, retail HP cartridges specifically designed for your printer, such as via Amazon. Once you do that, your printer will unlock and work normally right away.
